How to Ship Bottles, Vials, and Liquids Safely

Most liquid damage starts at the closure, so seal the container first, then hold it still and add a backup layer. This guide covers choosing containers, lined caps and induction seals, and using partitions or molded inserts so glass never touches glass. It adds sealed bags and absorbent pads as leak protection and a quick chart for glass, plastic, small vials, and hazardous liquids. It also flags DOT and IATA rules for hazmat shipments.

Most liquid damage starts at the closure. Seal the container first, then hold it still and add a backup layer in case it leaks.

Steps

  1. Pick the container for the product. Check chemical compatibility, and use amber or opaque containers for light-sensitive products.
  2. Seal the closure. Use a lined cap or an induction seal, and torque caps the same way every time.
  3. Keep each container from moving or touching another one. Use corrugated partitions, molded inserts, or foam.
  4. Add a backup layer for liquids: a sealed poly bag around each container and absorbent material inside the box.
  5. Mark the box “This Side Up” with orientation arrows, and do a drop test on a packed box before you ship in volume.
  6. For hazardous materials, follow DOT (ground) or IATA (air) rules. These set the packaging, marking, and paperwork required.

Product

Typical setup

Glass bottles and vials

Corrugated partitions or molded inserts, plus a cushioned double box for long trips

Plastic bottles and jugs

Snug box with dividers; seal caps to stop leaks

Small vials and samples

Foam or molded tray inserts with a sealed bag and absorbent pad

Hazardous liquids

UN-rated packaging, absorbent, and required markings

Common Mistakes

  • Relying on the cap alone. Caps back off from vibration and temperature changes, so add a seal or liner.
  • Letting glass touch glass, which leads to breakage from vibration even without a drop.
  • Shipping hazmat in standard boxes. This can bring fines and refused shipments.
