How to Set Up an Efficient Packing Station

Most wasted time at a packing station comes from walking, reaching, and searching for supplies. This guide shows how to watch your current process, lay the station out in a straight line, and set the bench at the right height. It covers keeping the most-used items within reach, mounting dispensers, setting par levels, and adding a conveyor. A quick table lists the station upgrades that save the most time and reduce injuries.

Put everything a packer uses within arm's reach; in the order they use it. Most wasted time at a packing station is walking, reaching, and searching.

Steps

  1. Watch one packer for 15 minutes. Note every step, walk, and reach, and where they wait for supplies.
  2. Lay out the station in a straight line from incoming product to outgoing box, so nothing moves backward.
  3. Set the work surface near elbow height for the people using it. Adjustable benches work best when shifts share a station.
  4. Place the most-used items (boxes, tape, fill, labels) within easy reach. Store backup stock above or below the bench, not across the room.
  5. Mount dispensers for tape, film, and labels so packers aren’t hunting for a hand tool.
  6. Set a par level for each supply at the station and assign someone to restock it at the start of each shift.
  7. Add a roller or powered conveyor if packers carry finished boxes away by hand.

Item

Why it helps

Mounted tape or gummed tape dispenser

Faster, more consistent seals

Overhead box and supply shelf

Keeps the work surface clear

On-demand void fill or air pillow system

Fill without leaving the station

Label printer at the bench

No walking to a shared printer

Gravity or powered conveyor

Moves finished boxes out without lifting

Gloves and cut-safe tools

Fewer hand injuries from tape, strap, and blades

Common Mistakes

  • Stocking only one or two box sizes at the station, which leads to oversized boxes and extra fill.
  • Letting supplies run out mid-shift because nobody owns restocking.
  • Setting one bench height for everyone, which causes strain and slows packing.
