How to Choose the Right Corrugated Box

Steps

1. Measure the product’s inside dimensions as length × width × depth. Add about 1/8″ per side for a snug fit, or 2″ per side if you’re adding cushioning.
2. Pick the strength rating. ECT (edge crush test) measures stacking strength, and Mullen (burst) measures puncture resistance. Use ECT for most palletized shipments.
3. Pick the flute. B-flute is thin and prints well, C-flute cushions and stacks better, and BC double-wall is for heavy or high-value loads.
4. Choose stock or custom. Stock is fastest and cheapest for low volumes. Custom pays off when you ship 1,000+ of one size, need printing, or are paying for empty space.

• Boxes that are too big. Carriers charge by dimensional weight, so empty space costs money on every shipment.
• Ignoring humidity and stacking time. Boxes lose strength in damp warehouses and long-term storage, so step up one grade.
• Choosing on price per box alone instead of total cost, including damage and freight.
