How to Choose Stretch Film and Wrap a Pallet

A consistent wrap pattern and the right film hold loads better than simply wrapping heavier. This guide explains when to move from hand film to a stretch wrapper (about 15 pallets a day) and how to match film gauge to the load. It also gives a step-by-step wrap pattern that locks the load to the pallet. It also shows how skipping machine pre-stretch can triple your film use, and it offers a free S&S film audit.

The right film plus a consistent wrap pattern holds loads better and often uses less film than wrapping heavier.

Steps

  1. Choose hand or machine film. Hand film suits fewer than about 15 pallets a day. Above that, a stretch wrapper usually pays for itself through film savings and labor.
  2. Pick the gauge using the table below. Pre-stretched and high-performance films can hold like thicker film at a lower gauge.
  3. Attach the film to the pallet, not just the product, so the load and pallet move as one.
  4. Wrap the base 2–3 times, overlap each pass by about 50% going up, wrap the top 2–3 times, and come back down.
  5. Do a quick check: push on the load. It should feel tight with no sliding layers.

Load

Typical film

Light, uniform boxes

60–70 gauge, or pre-stretched film

Medium mixed loads

70–80 gauge

Heavy, sharp, or irregular loads 80–100 gauge, or puncture-resistant film

Outdoor storage

UV-resistant film

Common Mistakes

  • Using heavier film to fix a bad wrap pattern. That wastes film without fixing the problem.
  • Not using the machine’s pre-stretch, which can mean using 2–3 times more film than needed.
  • Using the same film for every load instead of matching it to the load type.

Call S&S When

You want a free film audit. We test load holding and often cut film cost while keeping loads secure. We also carry shrink film, skin film, and pallet covers.
