Custom Printed Corner board: Protect the Load and Label the Load

Corner board (edge protectors) stops strapping and stretch film from crushing load edges. Printed corner board adds your logo, handling marks, or stacking limits on all four corners of the pallet. This post covers sizing and eight design steps.

Strapping pulled tight bites into the top edges of a load. Forklift tines and trailer walls crush the corners. Corner board spreads strap tension and adds stacking strength. Printing turns the same four pieces into signs every forklift driver reads.

Corner board Terms in Plain Words

  • Leg size: the width of each side of the angle, such as 2 × 2 inches or 3 × 3 inches.
  • Thickness (caliper): how thick the board is, in thousandths of an inch. Thicker board takes more strap tension and stacking weight.
  • Length: usually cut to the load height. Common lengths run from a few inches for strap protectors to full pallet height.
  • Moisture resistance: coated or waxed board for cold storage, humid docks, and outdoor storage.

What Manufacturers Print on Corner board

  • Company name and logo
  • “Do not stack,” “Do not double stack,” or a maximum stack height
  • “This side up” and fragile warnings
  • Product or customer identification for staging

The 8-Step Design Process

  1. Measure the load. Height, footprint, and weight of a finished pallet.
  2. Identify the stress points. Strap locations, stretch film tension, and stacking in the warehouse and trailer.
  3. Choose leg size and thickness. Wider legs and thicker board for heavy loads and high strap tension.
  4. Set the length. Full height for stacking strength, or short pieces under straps only.
  5. Pick the coating. Plain, moisture-resistant, or waxed, based on where loads sit.
  6. Lay out the print. Text runs along the length of the board. Size text for a driver to read from the forklift seat.
  7. Approve the proof. Check message, ink color, and orientation.
  8. Test on a real load. Strap and wrap a pallet. Check for crushed corners and legible print after shipping.

What to Know Before you Order

  • Printed corner board carries a minimum order quantity.
  • Cut lengths for each load height. Too short leaves the bottom corners exposed.
  • One color of ink on kraft board keeps cost down.

Run the Numbers Yourself

Pull 90 days of damage claims for crushed corners and strap damage. Add replacement product, reshipping, and claim handling hours. Compare the total to corner board cost per pallet × pallets shipped.
