Barrier film keeps oxygen, moisture, and odor away from your product. This guide walks you through a 6-step process to spec the right film: name the threat, set a transmission target, pick the barrier layer, check your seals, and test on your line.
Your product goes stale, changes color, or picks up moisture before your customer opens the package. The film around the product is often the cause.
Barrier film is a multilayer plastic film built to slow oxygen, moisture, or aroma from passing through.
A common industry rule of thumb calls a film “high barrier” when OTR falls below 15.5 cc/m²/day.
|
Barrier layer |
Strength |
Watch out for |
|
Nylon (PA) |
Puncture resistance, deep-draw forming |
Moderate oxygen barrier, about 15 to 25 cc/m²/day |
|
Nylon + EVOH |
Top oxygen barrier, about 1 to 3 cc/m²/day |
Weakens in high humidity, costs 15 to 30% more |
|
Metallized film |
Strong oxygen and moisture barrier, blocks light |
Opaque, so your customer won’t see the product |
EVOH stands for ethylene vinyl alcohol, a resin sandwiched between other plastic layers. Moisture weakens EVOH, so wet products need the EVOH layer buried inside moisture-blocking layers.
Multiply units scrapped or returned per month by your cost per unit. Compare the total with the monthly upcharge for a higher barrier film. Short shelf life usually costs more than the film.
Send us your current film spec and product details. We will compare barrier options and spell out the cost difference in dollars.
